Media Language Case Study (1)

1 comment:

  1. A satisfactory case study indicating proficient understanding of aspects of Goodwin's theory. Next steps:

    1) Include screen shots to illustrate your examples

    2) There is a relationship between lyrics and visuals.....you missed the sequence with the lyrics "let's get electrified", at this point the African raises his hand to a barbed wire fence. The barbed wire suggests imprisonment, whilst the lyrics "let's get electrified" add a further layer of meaning suggesting electric wire fences which were used concentration camps like Auschwitz during the 2nd world war, thus reinforcing the notion that the African is reduced to a sub human status in New York.

    3) Slide 6...Avoid generalisations, you suggest that music videos all include voyeuristic treatment of female artists. this is not so!!!! Remove this comment.

    4) I like the point you have made about the audience (Slide 6). You could say something like ...the audience are positioned with the bystanders and thus this music video makes uneasy viewing and suggests the audience look at the way they may regard "the other".

    5) Any inter textual references, do rather more research into the texts in order to indicate your ability to engage in independent research. For example the reference to Shelley's "Frankenstein". In this novel the creature rouses sympathy and fear because it is rejected by Dr Frankenstein and by all who it wants to befriend. I can help you with this.

A good start and an improvement in your vocabulary, now begin to be confident about developing your ideas.
